If you use Gemini without paying for it, your account is reportedly about to change. According to 9to5Google and The Decoder, both citing Google’s updated support page, free Gemini users will be limited to the smallest model, Flash-Lite, starting October 9. They would lose the standard Flash and Pro models. At the same time, Google has announced that Gems, its saved custom assistants, are being replaced by “skills”, and personal accounts lose Gems in November.

Two changes, one app. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what to do this week so you don’t lose work or pay for something you don’t need.

What happened?

Change 1: model access (reported). The Decoder reports that, starting in October 2026, Google will restrict which Gemini models personal-account users can reach. 9to5Google, which spotted the updated support document, gives October 9 as the date for people without a Google AI plan. Neither outlet quotes a Google spokesperson. Both point to the support page.

Change 2: Gems become skills (confirmed). On September 30, Google announced in its own blog post that skills are rolling out in Gemini chat and will replace Gems. Google’s help center says Gems will transition to skills starting in November 2026 for personal Google Accounts, and in 2027 for work and school accounts.

The Key Details

Who gets which model

This table is based on the 9to5Google and The Decoder reports. Prices are as those outlets list them.

Your plan Flash-Lite Flash Pro
No plan (free) Yes No No
Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) Yes Yes No
Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) Yes Yes Yes
Google AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99/month) Yes Yes Yes

A few more details from those reports:

  • Today’s free tier reportedly includes Gemini 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro, per The Decoder. That is what free users lose.
  • AI Plus subscribers lose Pro. They will get an email explaining when the change reaches them.
  • AI Pro subscribers lose nothing and reportedly gain Deep Think, the “maximum parallel reasoning” option that has been limited to the two Ultra price points.
  • 9to5Google also says the app looks set to add low, medium and high effort levels for each model in October. It notes that higher levels use more of your limit.
  • It is not yet clear where the new Gemini 4 Argon model will sit. Google has said it is coming first to AI Ultra subscribers, according to 9to5Google.

An important caveat. When we opened Google’s Gemini Apps limits page ourselves on October 5, it still showed an older table, with every plan able to use all three models. We could not see the updated version the two outlets describe. That could be a regional or rollout difference, or the page may simply not have refreshed for us. Check your own account before you act (see the steps below).

What skills are

Google describes skills as reusable custom instructions. Per its help center:

  • You type / (soon @) and the skill’s name in any Gemini chat.
  • Gemini can recognize when a skill fits your prompt and apply it without being asked.
  • You can stack several skills in one chat, such as a writing-style skill and a brand-guidelines skill.
  • Skills are available to individuals over 18 signed in to a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts come “soon”.
  • You can create as many as you like, but only 100 can be active at once.

Google’s own examples are practical: prepare for a presentation, match your writing style, or always ask for three to five viewpoints on a topic.

Why It Matters

This is a step toward tighter free access, and it lands on the people who use Gemini most casually.

The Decoder’s view is that the real-world impact is probably small, because most casual users don’t know which model they’re on and heavy users tend to pay already. That is a fair reading, but it is an opinion, not a measurement. If you rely on free Gemini for longer documents, tricky maths or code, you may notice the smaller model more.

The timing is also worth noting. The Decoder suggests Google may be preparing for Gemini 4 Argon, which could be costlier to run. That is speculation. Google has not said so.

What it means for you

If you use Gemini for free

  1. Check what you actually have. On gemini.google.com, Google’s help page says you can see your limits under Settings, then Usage Limits.
  2. Test your usual prompts on Flash-Lite. Google describes it as a fast model for everyday jobs such as summarizing and brainstorming. If your normal tasks fit that, you may not need to do anything.
  3. Decide before paying. If you only need Flash, the reported AI Plus tier has it. Pro is reportedly only on AI Pro and above, so a $4.99 plan will not bring it back.
  4. Compare other free tiers on your own tasks. OpenAI’s Free tier FAQ says free ChatGPT users get GPT-5.6 Luna, with unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse-prevention safeguards and separate limits for uploads, images and data analysis. That page said it was updated about two months before we checked, and OpenAI notes limits can change. We have not tested any of these models against each other, so try your own real tasks before deciding.

If you have Gems

Google says it will recreate your Gems as skills automatically when Gems go away. Some outlets have put a specific date, November 17, on this. Google’s own pages say only “November”, so treat the exact day as unconfirmed.

Two things deserve attention:

  • Not everything moves. Google’s blog says Opal, its mini-app builder, and Gems made in Google Labs will also shut down in November, and the Labs ones will not become skills.
  • Skills don’t yet do everything Gems did. Per the help center, they don’t currently work with Canvas, Deep Research, video or music creation, or guided learning. Sharing and Google Drive files are promised “in the coming weeks”.

If you want to move early, Google’s steps are: open the Gem and download its knowledge files, go to Settings, then Skills, choose Create manually, and paste in the name, description and instructions. If your Gem has files, you then download the new skill, add them next to its SKILL.md file, and upload the folder back. The folder name must match the skill name. Uploading files is currently limited to the Gemini web app and the Mac app.

One side benefit: Google says you can import skills built on other platforms by uploading their SKILL.md files.

If you run a team or business

Work and school accounts keep Gems until March 2027 (business, enterprise, nonprofit) and June 2027 (education), per Google. The model-access reports concern personal accounts only. Nothing we found covers API access or Google AI Studio, so don’t assume those are affected either way.

Both changes are a reminder that consumer AI tools change terms with little notice. If a workflow matters to your business, keep your prompts and instructions in a document you control, not only inside one app. If you’d rather build a repeatable workflow into your own systems, that is the sort of work covered on our AI Solutions and Automation page.

What Happens Next?

  • October 9: the reported start date for free users.
  • October: the reported new effort levels and Deep Think for AI Pro.
  • November: Gems begin to go away for personal accounts, with automatic migration.
  • Gemini 4 Argon: Google has not said when it arrives for regular users, or which plan will include it.

We will update this if Google publishes the new table or changes the dates.

Final Takeaway

If you use Gemini for free, the practical change is probably small, but check Settings after October 9 and run your usual prompts on Flash-Lite before paying for anything. If you have Gems, spend ten minutes now recreating the important ones as skills, and download any knowledge files while you’re there. And treat the exact model table as reported, not final, until Google’s own page matches it.
